February Fog 2008

I’d been watching the fog all day as I made my rounds plowing the snow that fell during the night. Being unable to wander into the woods and shoot some pictures was really starting to get on my nerves. This was the perfect fog for photographing. The light was soft, and the fog was just thin enough to let it through. It reminded me of one of the old knight movies, where you see them riding through the forest looking for dragons or a fair lady to rescue. As it got closer to quitting time, the fog grew thicker. By the time I got home the visibility was about 10 yards. I decided to give it a try anyway, so I packed up and headed out. When I arrived at the woods, there was a large flock of geese feeding in the farm field by the entrance. There had to be 200 or more. They started to get nervous with my arrival, so I took one quick picture and moved on before they spooked. This wouldn’t be a good day for them to take flight, being surrounded by tall trees. The fog was too thick to use anything but a wide angle lens. You had to be on top of everything or it just got lost in the fog. As it ended up, the fog made a really nice backdrop for the bare trees. When I was making my way back to the car I noticed the geese had moved, and I could now see the irrigation sprinkler in the field. This thing was huge and it was still sucked up by the fog. It looked pretty cool, how it just disappeared into the fog. There is something about walking through the woods in the fog that I love. I can’t wait until the next one arrives.
