Milkweed Seeds - October 2009
|
I have always believed that if you look hard enough you will be able to find something interesting. Today I arrived at the woods that I have been going to for some years now. The light was poor and the wind was blowing. All the fall colors looked dull and I found nothing of interest. I was on my way back to the car when I started to look more closely at what was around me. I came out here to shoot and really didn’t want to leave before I took some pictures. I noticed that I was standing only feet away from a patch of Milkweed seed pods that were starting to open. The wind was blowing, so the light cotton seeds were moving around a lot. It was also getting dark so my exposures would be slow. By putting up a wind block with my hat, I was able to get some shots. I love the way the seeds turn into abstract forms as the wind pulls them out of their pod and they begin their journey. I also like the way nature has laid them out in such perfection in the pod. I took some with shots with flash and some without. With the flash I was able to get a black background. I did this by shooting from under the seed and using the sky as the background. There are still plenty more out there, so I’ll be going back
