About The day...

Another winter has begun. After months of looking at nothing but brown and occasional gold in the woods I’m happy to see the fresh snow. No, I’m not a fan of the cold... but I do enjoy the new beauty winter brings. The fresh snow piled on evergreens and branch tips really adds a special touch to the landscape.
This morning when I went out a fog hung over the snow covered fields and frozen lakes. The woods were silent except for an occasional coyote barking or howling. There was no wind or other sound. The fog also makes for a great background when photographing the bare trees. By the time I arrived at the location (Wampum Lake), and walked to the back side of the lake, the fog was starting to clear. The fog hung in large banks that drifted in and out, at times leaving visibility of only 10-20 yards. Between the banks, it was like a thin smoke screen hanging behind the trees. I only got off a few shots before it started to rain and I left for home. That night brought freezing temperatures that made for firm ground again, so I decided to go out for another sunrise shoot. Wow, what beautiful light. I was in a clearing deep in the woods so the sunrise was behind the trees. The moon was visible in the west and the sunrise cast a beautiful golden light on the tree tops. The temperature was in the 20’s so I didn’t stay too long. Besides, it was Christmas morning and my wife and a pot of hot coffee were waiting for my return. More to come…
